Princess Cruises names Matthew McConaughey as 'godparent' to Star Princess ship

Princess Cruises has named Hollywood celebrities Camila and Matthew McConaughey as the 'godparents' of its new cruise ship Star Princess.

The cruise brand, which is owned by Carnival, announced that the ship's celebratory naming ceremony will take place on 6 November, in Fort Lauderdale.

It will follow the Star Princess debut sailing, which will depart Barcelona on 4 October with a round-trip Mediterranean voyage.

The appointment continues a legacy that has included cultural icons such as Princess Diana, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren, marking the start of a new chapter for the line’s most innovative ship to date.

"With Princess, it's not just a vacation - it's time well spent, families and friends coming together, meeting new folks, and making memories. This ship's got that spirit built right in, and we're proud to be part of her story from the beginning," The McConaughey's said in a statement.

Princess Cruises noted that its fleet stocks Pantalones Organic Tequila, the McConaughey's tequila brand, and the drink is used in signature cocktails onboard, including a '24k Gold Margarita'.

The cruise line has capacity for 4,300 guests, with more than 1,500 balcony cabins.

On board Star Princess, guests will find 30 distinct dining and bar venues plus 'The Sanctuary' - which has its own restaurant and adults-only pool deck - and 'The Dome' relaxation and entertainment space, 'The Arena' high-tech theater, a sweeping Piazza.

Star Princess also boasts 'Spellbound by Magic Castle', a speakeasy-style entertainment venue created in a collaboration with Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle.

After the inaugural cruise out of Barcelona, Star Princess moves across the Atlantic, with a winter program running from Fort Lauderdale to Alaska kicking off from 7 November.
