Ryanair announced its latest expansion in Italy, with the European budget airline basing a pair of aircraft in Trapani-Marsala, Sicily.
The airline will, from January, run 23 routes from the Sicilian airport including eleven new links to major European cities like London, Brussels, and Stockholm as well as other Italian connections like Rome, Milan, Bari and Verona.
Smaller regional airports like Bournemouth, Pescara, and Saarbrücken will also fly into Sicily.
"We’ve worked closely with both the Regional Govt. and Airgest team to deliver this exciting investment," said Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson.
"Since first flying to Sicily in 2003 Ryanair has carried 100 million passengers to/from Sicily, our new Trapani-Marsala base will deliver 2 new aircraft, 23 routes (11 new), more than 1 million passengers annually, and support over 800 local jobs."
The Ryanair expansion in Sicily comes after the Sicilian Region’s decision to scrap a municipal tax.
"Thanks to the elimination of the municipal surtax, strongly advocated by the Schifani Government, air traffic to Sicilian airports will be incentivized by up to 5 million passengers," said Alessandro Arico, Sicily councillor for infrastructure and mobility.
Ryanair is expected to invest €200 million in the operation in Sicily.
